992 Loader 3000' Underground Canvas Print

“We’re going to an underground salt mine where they run 992 loaders,” our host said in a German accent.

What? Because of the difference in language and culture, I wasn’t sure I understood correctly. How could they run such machines underground?

We arrived at the mine, which wasn’t much more than a few industrial buildings in the German woods. They ushered us into changing rooms, where white jumpsuits awaited us.

After a brief training on an emergency breathing apparatus in case of a catastrophe, we climbed into the small cage they called an elevator.

At the press of a button, we dropped 800 meters in only a minute. As the light disappeared, the reality of the underground world we hurdled toward sank in.

The air was cool, and the mine was more spacious than expected. We walked a short distance to an awaiting topless Jeep. Our host, who must’ve been a former racing driver, hit the throttle, and we tore through the tunnels Indiana Jones-style.

Since the mine rivals Munich in size, we had a long drive to our destination, a workshop about 3,000’ beneath the Earth’s surface.

One 992 sat parked under bright fluorescent lighting, like a piece of art on display. Only moments later, another 992 rounded the corner, slowly rolled into the shop and dropped its monster bucket on the floor.

Crawling around the machines was a blast, but we desperately wanted to see them in action. They only work on the weekends to feed the plant above when the production operations stop, but we talked them into a brief demonstration.

They fired up the 992K, quickly filling the cavern with noise. The machine lifted its bucket and rolled toward a small opening at the other end of the workshop, leading to the main work area. I captured the moment forever as it barely slid through the narrow passageway.
